Table 7 of 10 in the Math Engine 28-day challenge
The 7 times table is mostly review
Many people find the 7s the hardest table, but here is some good news. If you have worked through the earlier tables, you already know most of it. 7 × 2 = 14 comes from the 2 times table, 7 × 3 = 21 from the 3s, 7 × 4 = 28 from the 4s, 7 × 5 = 35 from the 5s and 7 × 6 = 42 from the 6s. Multiplication works the same in either order, so these answers are old friends.
What is actually new
Only three answers are left: 7 × 7 = 49, 7 × 8 = 56 and 7 × 9 = 63. That is where most of your attention should go.
For 7 × 8, there is a classic memory aid: the numbers 5, 6, 7, 8 in a row give you 56 = 7 × 8.
Patterns in the 7 times table
7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49, 56, 63, 70
- The ones digits count down by three, going around: 7, 4, 1, 8, 5, 2, 9, 6, 3, 0. By the tenth answer you have visited every digit from 0 to 9, just like in the 3 times table.
- Add 7 each time. If you lose the thread, count up from the last answer you are sure about.
Test yourself
After the video, check what stuck. Math Engine gives you ten questions on the 7 times table, a hint after each answer, and a review round for the ones you missed. It is free and needs no sign-up.
