Table 2 of 10 in the Math Engine 28-day challenge
The 2 times table is doubling
Multiplying by 2 means doubling: 2 × 6 is 6 + 6. That makes it one of the most useful tables to have ready, because doubling shows up everywhere, from splitting a bill to the 4 and 8 times tables later in the challenge.
Patterns in the 2 times table
2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20
- Every answer is even. There are no odd numbers in this table.
- The ones digits repeat a short loop: 2, 4, 6, 8, 0, and again 2, 4, 6, 8, 0.
Don’t mix up 2 × 8 with 2 + 8
When you hesitate, the mind can reach for addition instead of multiplication, and 2 + 8 = 10 sounds plausible. But 2 × 8 means two groups of eight: 8 + 8 = 16. If an answer feels uncertain, double the number out loud and see if it matches. In this table only 2 × 2 gives the same result as 2 + 2.
Where this leads
Double the 2 times table and you get the 4 times table. Double that and you get the 8s. The practice you do today carries into the harder tables.
