Table 4 of 10 in the Math Engine 28-day challenge
The 4 times table is doubling twice
Multiplying by 4 means doubling, and then doubling again. For 4 × 7, double 7 to get 14, then double 14 to get 28. If you have practiced the 2 times table, you already have the tool for this one.
Patterns in the 4 times table
4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40
- The ones digits repeat a loop of five: 4, 8, 2, 6, 0, and then again 4, 8, 2, 6, 0.
- Every answer is double the matching answer in the 2 times table. 2 × 6 = 12, and 12 doubled is 24, which is 4 × 6.
- Half of any answer takes you back to the 2s. Half of 32 is 16, and 2 × 8 = 16, so 4 × 8 = 32.
A check you can do in your head
If you are unsure of 4 × 8, think of the 2s: 2 × 8 = 16, and doubled that is 32. If your two routes agree, you can trust the answer.
Where this leads
Double the 4s and you get the 8 times table. The more automatic doubling feels, the easier the harder tables become.
Test yourself
After the video, check what stuck. Math Engine gives you ten questions on the 4 times table, a hint after each answer, and a review round for the ones you missed. It is free and needs no sign-up.
