Table 1 of 10 in the Math Engine 28-day challenge

The 1 times table: start with the easy one

Every routine needs a starting point, and the 1 times table is ours. It is the quickest table to learn, which makes it a good way to get used to the format of the videos before the harder tables arrive.

What multiplying by 1 means

1 × 7 means one group of seven, so the answer is 7. Whatever number you multiply by 1 stays exactly the same: 1 × 9 = 9, 1 × 10 = 10, 1 × 3 = 3.

The same is true the other way around. 5 × 1 is five groups of one, which is also 5. The order does not change the result.

Why bother with an easy table

Because the point of the first video is the routine, not the table. Five rounds forward, five in reverse, saying every answer out loud: this is the habit you will repeat with every table in the challenge. If the 1s feel too simple, that is fine. Use them to settle into the rhythm.

Test yourself

After the video, check what stuck. Math Engine gives you ten questions on the 1 times table, a hint after each answer, and a review round for the ones you missed. It is free and needs no sign-up.
