Table 5 of 10 in the Math Engine 28-day challenge
The 5 times table is half of the 10s
Multiplying by 5 is half of multiplying by 10. For 5 × 8, think 10 × 8 = 80, and half of 80 is 40. This works with any number and it is faster than counting up in fives.
Patterns in the 5 times table
5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50
- Every answer ends in 5 or 0, and they alternate.
- An even number of fives ends in 0, and an odd number ends in 5. 5 × 4 = 20, but 5 × 7 = 35.
- The tens digits go 0, 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4, 4, 5. After the first answer, each one appears twice in a row.
Think of a clock
Look at the face of an analog clock: every number is five minutes further on. The 7 stands for 35 minutes past the hour, and 5 × 7 = 35. The 9 stands for 45, and 5 × 9 = 45. If you can read the minutes on a clock, you already know most of this table.
